Plasterboard Profiles: Shadow Gap, Edge and Transition Guide

The plasterboard profiles in this category are sections used to form shadow gaps, edge finishes, transitions and decorative details on ceilings and walls. They should not be thought of as doing the same job as the load-bearing framing profiles of a plasterboard system. The choice is made according to where the board ends and what kind of line is wanted at the visible junction.

The key point

Treat a decorative shadow gap, a board edge finish and a movement joint as separate needs.

What does a decorative plasterboard profile do?

Dividing a wide wall with defined lines, creating a shadow effect between ceiling and wall, or finishing an open board edge are the jobs these products are considered for. The profile defines the boundary of the finishing material and helps the detail to be applied in a repeatable way.

A shadow gap line and a movement joint are not formed for the same purpose. A decorative gap does not by itself provide the technical detail needed to accommodate the movement expected in the building. If the project includes a movement joint, its capacity, position and relationship with the top finish must be resolved separately.

Which section suits which junction?

Shadow Gap Profile can be considered for a shadow line or a dividing line on the surface. Edge sections such as the F Profile are assessed according to the board edge finish. In Z, stepped Z, T and corner edge trim models, the visible line and the part where the board sits are different; the orientation in the drawing matters.

Concealed Light Strip Profile is a separate option that can be considered in projects where a lighting detail is planned. System-related sections such as Clipin H should also not be chosen on the similarity of the letter alone. Which panel or ceiling system it will work with and the type of connection must be determined.

Board thickness and the finished surface

When checking the fit of the profile groove with the board, do not look only at the nominal board thickness. The board layers, the finishing material and the level of the visible surface should be shown together in the detail. A profile set at the wrong level can create an unwanted step after plastering and painting.

On long shadow gap runs, continuity of the axis is important. Marking the line at the start and end of the wall may not be enough on its own; the alignment at intermediate points is also checked. How the line will end at a door frame, a column or a ceiling return is decided in advance.

Checklist before installation

Prepare the ceiling or wall section and mark which part of the chosen profile will remain visible. Plan the board joints and the profile joints. Fixing and surface finishing should be carried out in line with the product detail; random screw positions can deform a thin section or spoil the visible surface.

In a detail that includes a light strip, cable and driver access is resolved before the plaster is closed. Because lighting can make surface defects more noticeable, the quality of the finish is checked separately. For a quotation, share the board thickness, the shadow gap or edge appearance you want, the total run length and the corner details. In this way the actual place of use is understood as well as the name of the product.

Frequently asked questions

Are these load-bearing plasterboard profiles?

This guide covers decorative edge and transition sections. The selection and calculation of the load-bearing frame is made according to separate system requirements.

Does a shadow gap prevent all cracking?

No. Cracking depends on factors such as the substructure, the board joints, movement and workmanship. A decorative shadow gap is not a structural movement solution on its own.

Can the profile be added after painting is finished?

Many details are integrated in the sequence of board, plaster and paint. Adding one later depends on the scope of the alteration required and on the product section.
