What Is a Tile Trim? Corner, Edge and Joint Selection

Tile trim profiles are products that finish the corner, the open edge or a particular junction of a tiled surface. The visible metal face becomes part of the design while forming a neat finish at the tile edge. To choose correctly, first determine the direction of the corner, then the profile height and the installation sequence.

The key point

With a tile trim, choose the junction type first and then the tile height.

Are a corner profile and an edge trim the same?

An external corner is the point where two tiled surfaces turn outwards, while an internal corner is the junction that turns inwards. A straight edge trim can finish the tile next to another surface or at an open edge. For this reason, it is not appropriate to use the same section in every detail by looking only at colour and height.

Bathroom niches, splashback tiling, shop walls and floor edges may require different sections. Whether the visible face is square, rounded or narrower affects the aesthetic choice. However, how the tile will sit is checked before the decorative form.

Choosing a model by tile thickness

The 10-12 mm Square External Corner Profile can be considered for edges that turn outwards. For an open edge, the 8-10-12 mm Straight Edge Trim Profile offers a different option. The size range in the product name indicates the options available in that model; which variant to use is determined by the actual tiling detail.

The tile thickness and the adhesive bed are assessed together with the way the profile sits. It is not correct in every case to simply add the two thicknesses together and choose the profile height. Do a trial with a short piece of tile and the actual adhesive bed to check the relationship between the top surfaces.

Keep joint and levelling products separate

The 10-12 mm Movement Joint Profile is considered for the movement joint detail. It does not do the same job as a decorative corner or edge trim section. The position and width of the joint and the expected movement should be assessed for each project. Movement joints in the substrate are taken into account in the tiling detail.

Levelling clips and wedges, on the other hand, are installation accessories that help to align adjacent tiles. On their own they do not correct an uneven screed or an incorrect adhesive bed. These products should not be thought of as having the same function as permanent edge profiles.

What determines the visible result at installation?

If the section has a flange that goes under the tile, its placement is prepared together with the tiling. It is important that no void is left beneath it, that the line is kept true and that the corner joints are cut cleanly. The profile surface is cleaned of mortar and cutting residue using a method compatible with the product; abrasive treatments that damage the surface finish are avoided.

In a terrace or wet area detail, the profile does not replace waterproofing and drainage. The appropriate material and finish are chosen together with the environmental conditions. For a quotation, share the tile thickness, a photograph of the internal or external corner, the edge lengths and the surface appearance you want. This allows a more accurate comparison between sections with similar names.

Frequently asked questions

Should the profile height be the same as the tile thickness?

The final choice is made according to the placement detail of the product. The tile and the adhesive bed are trialled together to check the relationship with the finished surface.

Can an external corner profile be used in an internal corner?

The geometry of the two junctions is different. Whether the section sits properly and gives the intended finish should be assessed from the technical drawing.

Does a terrace profile provide waterproofing?

The edge detail does not replace the waterproofing system. The waterproofing, fall and drainage connections are completed separately within the scope of the project.
