What Is an LED Skirting Profile? Selection and Installation

An LED skirting profile is a type of profile used to finish the junction between wall and floor while adding lighting along that line. It can create a line of light close to the floor in corridors, hotel rooms and homes. When the finishing geometry and the direction of the light are chosen together, the base of the wall looks tidier.

The key point

With LED skirting, the deciding dimension is the light opening that remains relative to the finished floor.

Where is it used and what need does it meet?

The aim may be a low-level line of light for moving around at night, a line that marks the boundary of the space in a long corridor or a decorative accent around a living room. It should not be assumed that this use fulfils general lighting or regulated emergency wayfinding functions by itself. Each lighting task is designed according to its own requirement.

Light close to the floor can make the texture and cleanliness of the flooring more visible. Reflections can occur on glossy surfaces and shadows on a rough wall. For this reason it is useful to examine the sample not only with the profile in hand but switched on next to the wall and floor where it will be used.

Surface-mounted model or plaster-in model?

The LED Skirting Profile is one of the options that can be considered according to the existing finish. With plaster-in models, the junction between the body and the surface is planned at an earlier stage. For the 80 mm Plaster-In LED Skirting Profile, the finished wall and floor levels must be considered together according to the section detail.

The Oval-Base LED Skirting Profile offers a different bottom surface shape. Review the drawing rather than inferring the light output angle or all the installation requirements from the model name. How the profile will end beside a door frame, a wall corner and fixed furniture is also part of the model selection.

Floor level and light opening

Taking the measurement from the subfloor can lead to the light opening narrowing or to an unwanted gap once the final covering is laid. The finished level that will result after the tiles, the wood flooring and the underlying layers are completed is taken as the basis. If the level changes along the wall, a measurement taken at a single point is not sufficient.

Access to the cover and the LED seat may be needed because of cleaning or impact. The maintenance method of the chosen section should be understood in advance. Where wet cleaning is carried out, the electrical components are not assumed to be protected against moisture merely because an aluminium profile is present; the suitability of the whole system is checked.

Resolve the corners and the power feed in advance

Draw up a separate parts list for internal corners, external corners and the ends beside doors. After calculating the quantity from the wall perimeter, account for the door openings and the pieces to be cut. The appearance of the profile joints and the cover joints should be assessed at the same place; haphazard joints can make the light look broken.

The electrical feed of long runs and the driver location are planned at the start of the project. Avoiding a layout that requires the whole skirting to be removed to reach the driver makes maintenance easier. In a quotation request, share the wall section, the floor covering, the total run length, the number of corners and the LED information. In this way the aesthetic preference and the site conditions can be assessed together.

Frequently asked questions

Can LED skirting be fitted retrospectively?

It can be considered if there is a model suitable for surface mounting and a cable route. Plaster-in models may require additional alteration work on an existing wall.

Can the expansion gap of wood flooring be covered?

The skirting junction must be resolved so that it does not constrict the movement gap specified by the flooring manufacturer. Covering the gap visually is a separate matter from restricting movement.

Is the line of light affected by cleaning?

Moisture and cleaning agents are assessed with regard to the cover, the surface and the electrical components. Suitability cannot be inferred from the material of the profile alone.
