Stair Nosing Profiles: Model and Size Guide
A stair nosing profile is used to finish the front edge of a step and to give the tread surface a defined detail. L-section models, models with a rubber insert, models that sit under the covering and models with LED meet different requirements. The right product is chosen by assessing the step geometry together with whether the installation is new or existing.

Choose the stair nosing profile together with the edge geometry and the actual conditions of use.
The role of the profile at the step nosing
The front edge of a step is an area that receives frequent contact in use. The profile defines this line, tidies the edge of the covering and, depending on the model chosen, provides a different tread surface. When assessing ribbed or rubber insert surfaces, performance should not be assumed from the product name alone.
Slip behaviour changes with the surface texture, footwear, water, dirt and cleaning conditions. For this reason, no profile can be said to prevent slipping in every environment without a test certificate. The conditions of use of the project and the required performance should be examined separately.
L-shaped, rubber insert and illuminated models
The 25x40 L Stair Nosing Profile with Rubber Insert is one of the options that finish the top and front face of the step in an L shape. The geometry and connection of the rubber insert are checked from the section. Ribbed L, F or other covering edge models may not share the same installation sequence.
The 11 mm Stair Nosing Profile with Rubber Insert can be examined separately in terms of its relationship with the covering. The Between-Step LED Stair Profile, on the other hand, is a different detail that includes a light line. The placement of the illuminated product and the mechanical finish of the step nosing should not be treated as the same requirement.
Quick selection by requirement
| Requirement / criterion | Option to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Existing step edge | Suitable L section | Top flange, front face and fixing |
| Need for a rubber insert surface | Rubber insert model | Surface condition and part compatibility |
| Installation together with the covering | Suitable recessed section | Covering height and work sequence |
| Light line on the step | LED model | Electrical access and light direction |
Where should you take the measurements?
Measure the width of the step, the shape of the front edge, the thickness of the covering and the junction with the riser. In a new installation, take the finished covering level as the basis. On an existing staircase, do not assume that all the steps are the same size; small differences affect how long profile pieces sit in particular.
The top flange of the profile must suit the tread area and its front face must suit the riser. A section that creates excessive projection or an irregular level difference should not be chosen. Prepare an end detail for corners and open side ends. No exposed, sharp edges should be left after cutting.

Installation and in-use checks
The soundness and flatness of the substrate are checked. The fixing method is determined by the profile model, the covering and the load in use. A section that goes under the covering cannot be added to a finished staircase by the same method. The work sequence should be settled before the product is chosen.
In installations with LED, the power supply, cable protection and maintenance access are planned. If replacing the rubber insert or the cover is anticipated, information on compatible spare parts is obtained. In your quotation request, share the number of steps, the length of each piece, the nosing section, the type of covering and whether the setting is indoor or outdoor. In the final check, assess the straightness of the lines, the soundness of the fixings and the level transitions on the tread surface.

Frequently asked questions
Is a profile with a rubber insert definitely anti-slip?
No guarantee can be given regardless of conditions. The required slip performance should be assessed together with test data and the environment of use.
Is one measurement enough for all the steps?
On an existing staircase there may be differences between steps. It is more accurate to prepare a parts list by checking the lengths and edge geometry on site.
Can an LED stair nosing profile be used outdoors?
The profile, the LED, the connections and the installation system must be suitable for outdoor conditions. Having LED in the product name alone does not show this suitability.
